There are approximately 300 peonies contained in one bed. They are around 40 years old and give a spectacular display in early Summer.
In the past, rows of potatoes were planted between the trees in the apple orchard, and there were also asparagus, rhubarb and artichoke beds.
At one point in recent history, the garden had over 1,500 roses, as well as six vegetable plots, large fruit cages (which included 300 strawberry plants) and glass houses which housed peaches and vines.
Horticulture at Gawdy Hall
In the heart of the Estate lies 0.687 hectares of walled garden which is being carefully preserved under the expertise of John Spurdens. Old fashioned espaliers run alongside some of the walkways behind very neat box hedges, giving a beautiful lacy picture against the red brick walls when blossoming in the Spring. The warm and sheltered glasshouses run along the entire north end and house climbing geraniums, fresias and tomatoes, each section giving off wonderfully evocative smells and gorgeous colours throughout the Summer.
